Here’s why an untidy garden could devalue your home

WHOEVER said ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ certainly wasn’t talking about houses.

That’s because kerb appeal, or what your property looks like from the outside, has a huge impact on potential buyers. After all, it’s first impressions that count and if your home gives off an air of general neglect it isn’t likely to win over would-be purchasers. In fact, an untidy garden could actually devalue your home.

So while nobody expects fully landscaped borders or a lawn worthy of Wimbledon, it does pay to spend a little time making sure your garden is as presentable as possible. With this in mind, we’ve put together some  top tips on sprucing up your outdoor space.

Weed out your problems

Make sure pathways and patios are free of weeds. Similarly, think about cutting back overgrown shrubs that viewers may have to duck under or grapple with just to get into the back garden. An afternoon of effort could make all the difference when it comes to selling your property.

If your garden has become a bit of a dumping ground, it might be worth having a clear out. It’s a bit of a stretch to ask people to see beyond broken swings, old sofas and rusting car parts and imagine their dream home.

Small can be beautiful

Don’t have much of a garden to speak of? It’s still important to make the most of your home’s exterior. Think about installing tubs with box topiary on either side of the front door, put up hanging baskets or plant some window boxes. Even if you live in an apartment, adding a little bit of greenery such as a herb planter can help increase your property’s appeal.

Be neighbourly

If your neighbours are just as untidy as you then while you’re having a clear out, why not offer to move some of their rubbish at the same time? If you’re trimming back the hedge, then asking if they’d like their side cutting too is only good manners. That way you can subtly sort out the problem without causing offence.

Here’s what else you shouldn’t forget:

  • Paint the front door if it looks a little tired and faded
  • Make sure all guttering and fascias are in good order
